The above options reads like this:
1. Companies did a right thing by deducting 1 day salary 2. The decision to donate is made by company, so the company should donate 3. Employee salaries should be increased by a day and this should be given as donation. 4. Any way... employees can donate generously irrespective of any deduction from salary. 5. Some companies donate to have name in media 6. Employees will not donate if companies do not force them to do so.
Many companies has deducted 1 day salary from employees for Tsunami tragedy. What do you feel...
Check out this appeal from www.shaadi.com
Dear Shaadi.com family member,
A lot has been said about the recent tsunami tragedy. Now, it's time that our actions speak louder than our words. At Shaadi.com, we've sprung into action. The effort so far
All employees of People Group (which owns Shaadi.com) have contributed at least 1 day of their December salary towards tsunami relief. Some have contributed a lot more. The company has matched the total employee contribution, and doubled the corpus.
What next
To the above corpus, we will add 10% of all Premium Membership fees for January 2005. In addition, I will also be undertaking a drive to raise money through my personal contacts and network.
At the end of the month, the entire contribution from the Shaadi.com family (employees, members, network) will be deposited into the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and the NASSCOM foundation. (We will display the final amount on the Shaadi.com site as well.)
How you can contribute
All Shaadi.com members are part of the Shaadi.com Family. We are overwhelmed with mails from so many of you, expressing your eagerness to participate in the relief work.
So, here is what you can do. If you are considering becoming a Shaadi.com Premium Member, do so any time in January and automatically, you would have contributed 10% towards tsunami relief. Click here
I sincerely hope you will actively join the Shaadi.com Tsunami Relief Effort.

Re Poll:
Employees should not be forced to donate. It is clearly a question of individual capacity and should be treated as such.
You never know what kind of personal financial situation each employee could be into.
Instead, it would be prudent to motivate employees to donate their salary and leave it up to them to take the final decision.

I have been reading in the newspapers that several indian companies have donated for Tsunami calamity. The contribution included company contribution and employee contribution.
The donations have to be made... no doubt about it.
The point here to make was that:
1. Several companies had taken a decision that the employees 1 day salary should be deducted. This happended during Latur earthquake. Moreso like order.
The companies can request for donation rather than order its employees to donate. Companies do not have right to decide how the employee should spend their salary. Everyone has his monthly budget how to spend his income.
2. None of the companies in their internal circular may have stated, how much they are contributing for the cause irrespective of employees contribution. It is only after the donations are collected... final figures are told. If company is genuinely bothered... it should be told in advance...company contribution.
3. Some of the companies have used this as an opportunity to promote their business.. Take for instance shaadi.com (Refer their appeal in this post).
4. After all the contributions have been made, at the end of the year, govt. takes a decision to have surcharge on income take. I think, this was done during Gujarat earthquake. So people who have contributed for the cause have to donate more.
In my opinon, donations should be made in corporate and personal capacity.
- Companies should donate as a corporate entity to PM relief fund and charitable organizations.
- Contributions from employees can be requested instead of being ordered. Everyone has right to decide how much to donate.

Dear friends,
I think there are some more facts about such donations
1) In most cases people want to donate generously for such causes but selection of right institute is a problem.
2) I think that is the reason most people do not object one day salary deduction by the employer as it becomes easy for them.
3) But employers descision to deduct one day salary is forced and furthermore employers commitment to match equal amount is a conditional commitment to donate for both employee and employer.Donations shall be made intentional and not conditional.
3)I believe if this channel is to be adopted employer should first decalre their contribution and also declare as to how they propose to utilize their funds. It could be saracastic but even PM Relief fund is very difficult to trust as no Indian as of today would believe any institute where politicians are involved(Is loosing trust on politicians healthy for a country's growth is a new topic to discuss).
4)I believe rather than donating through employer where we do not know if our money is eventually going to the right institute we should make our own selection.
5)The selection of right institute can be made only if we are in regular association of one.Such natural calamities occur every couple of years in some corner of the earth. We should have sympathy for people of all countries that's how we can expect sympathy from others when it comes to our people suffering.
6) FFL is one institute which works through out the year for such causes.Serving of fresh food is something no other institute does. What is the use of distributing just rice & grains when people have lost all their cooking utensils and even homes.Distributing of raw grains is more prone to theft and improper use.
7)Becoming member of FFL could be one option to be a regular part of a charitable institute. All the facts are available on their site and I think they are doing it all solely on humanitarian grounds.
Thanks, Sandeep
